What do you do when you’re not sure? That’s the topic of my sermon today.

Last year, when President Kennedy was assassinated, who among us did not experience the most profound disorientation? Despair? Which way? What now? What do I say to my kids? What do I tell myself? It was a time of people sitting together, bound together by a common feeling of hopelessness. But think of that! Your BOND with your fellow being was your Despair. It was a public experience. It was awful, but we were in it together. How much worse is it then for the lone man, the lone woman, stricken by a private calamity?

‘No one knows I’m sick.’

‘No one knows I’ve lost my last real friend.’

‘No one knows I’ve done something wrong.’

Imagine the isolation. Now you see the world as through a window. On one side of the glass: happy, untroubled people, and on the other side: you.

I want to tell you a story. A cargo ship sank one night. It caught fire and went down. And only this one sailor survived. He found a lifeboat, rigged a sail…and being of a nautical discipline…turned his eyes to the Heavens and read the stars. He set a course for his home, and exhausted, fell asleep. Clouds rolled in. And for the next twenty nights, he could no longer see the stars. He thought he was on course, but there was no way to be certain. And as the days rolled on, and the sailor wasted away, he began to have doubts. Had he set his course right? Was he still going on towards his home? Or was he horribly lost… and doomed to a terrible death? No way to know. The message of the constellations – had he imagined it because of his desperate circumstance? Or had he seen truth once… and now had to hold on to it without further reassurance? There are those of you in church today who know exactly the crisis of faith I describe. And I want to say to you: DOUBT can be a bond as powerful and sustaining as certainty. When you are lost, you are not alone.

But those who understand cold
know that even as it deadens,
it offers perverse salvation.

Heat is a presence: the rapid vibrating of molecules.
Cold is an absence:
the damping of the vibrations.

At absolute zero, minus 459.67 degrees Fahrenheit,
molecular motion ceases altogether. It is this slowing
that converts gases to liquids, liquids
to solids, and renders solids harder.
It slows bacterial growth
and chemical reactions.

In the human body, cold shuts
down metabolism. The lung
take in less oxygen,
the heart pumps less blood.

Under normal temperatures,
this would produce brain damage. But the chilled brain,
having slowed its own metabolism, needs far less oxygen-rich blood
and can,under the right circumstances,
survive intact.

Red lights are flashing down the highway
I wonder if we’re gonna ever get home
I wonder if we’re gonna ever get home tonight
Everywhere the water’s getting rough
Your best intentions may not be enough
I wonder if we’re gonna ever get home tonight

But if you break down, I’ll drive out and find you
If you forget my love, I’ll try to remind you
And stay by you when it don’t come easy

I don’t know nothing except change will come
Year after year what we do is undone
Time keeps moving from a crawl to a run
I wonder if we’re gonna ever get home
You’re out there walking down a highway
And all of the signs got blown away
Sometimes you wonder if you’re walking in the wrong direction

So many things that I had before
That don’t matter to me now
Tonight I cry for the love that I’ve lost
And the love I’ve never found
When the last bird falls
And the last siren sounds

Vivir Sin Aire

Cómo quisiera poder vivir sin aire
Cómo quisiera vivir sin agua
Me encantaría
Querete un poco menos
Cómo quisiera poder vivir sin ti

Pero no puedo siento que muero
Me estoy ahogando sin tu amor

Cómo quisiera poder vivir sin aire
Cómo quisiera calmar mi aflicción
Cómo quisiera poder vivir sin agua
Me encantaría robar tu corazón

Cómo pudiera un pez nadar sin agua
Cómo puidera un ave volar sin alas
Cómo puidera la flor crecer sin tierra
Cómo quisiera porder vivir sin ti

Pero no puedo siento que muero
Me estoy ahogando sin tu amor

Cómo quisiera poder vivir sin aire
Cómo quisiera calmar mi aflicción
Cómo quisiera poder vivir sin agua
Me encantaría robar tu corazón

Cómo quisiera lanzarte al olvido
Cómo quisiera guardarte en un cajón
Cómo quisiera borrarte de un soplido
Me encantaría matar esta canción

To Live Without Air

How much I’d like to be able to live without air
how much I’d like to live without water
I’d love
to love you a bit less
how much I’d love to be able to live without you

But I can’t, I feel I’m dying
I’m drowning without your love

How much I’d like to be able to live without air
How much I’d like to calm my affliction
How much I’d like to be able to live without water
I’d love to steal your heart

How could a fish swim without water?
How could a bird fly without wings?
How could a flower blossom without soil?
How much I’d like to be able to live without you

But I can’t, I feel I’m dying
I’m drowning without your love

How much I’d like to be able to live without air
How much I’d like to calm my affliction
How much I’d like to be able to live without water
I’d love to steal your heart

How much I’d like to throw you into oblivion
How much I’d like to put you away in a drawer
How much I’d like to erase you by blowing
I’d love to kill off this song

When I think back to the
first time in my childhood
When I saw that face
I thought right then,
‘That’s a real good looking boy’

I saw myself in the mirror
in profile
for the first time
I thought,
‘Hey! That’s a real good looking boy’

And I felt then
that I moved
With all those lucky fucks and angels
High in the theatre
In the sky

So I ran to my mother
I said,
‘Mom – take a look at me
Have you ever seen a teen
Fly so high?’

That’s a real good looking boy
That’s a real good looking boy

She said,
‘Son, well, you know,
you’re an ugly boy.
You don’t really look like him

In this long line
There’s been some
real strange genes
You’ve got ‘em all
You’ve got ‘em all
With some extras thrown in’

That’s a real good looking boy
That’s a real good looking boy
That’s a real good looking boy
That’s a real good looking boy

Wise men say
Only fools, only fools rush in
But I – I can’t help
Falling in love, in love with you

Now I’m here with you little darling
And you say, ‘You’re beautiful as you are’
And I’ve managed somehow to survive

You arrived in my life like a fragrance and
you help me find a way to laugh
Now I Know how so-called beauty lies

God gave him a face
Then he gave me something above
God gave me a grace
Man, he gave me your sweet, sweet, sweet love

You make me feel like I’m a real good looking boy
I feel I’m a real good looking boy
That’s a real good looking boy
That’s a real good looking boy

I don’t love you as if you were the salt-rose, topaz
or arrow of carnations that propagate fire:
I love you as certain dark things are loved,
secretly, between the shadow and the soul.

I love you as the plant that doesn’t bloom and carries
hidden within itself the light of those flowers,
and thanks to your love, darkly in my body
lives the dense fragrance that rises from the earth.

I love you without knowing how, or when, or from where,
I love you simply, without problems or pride:
I love you in this way because I don’t know any other way of loving

but this, in which there is no I or you,
so intimate that your hand upon my chest is my hand,
so intimate that when I fall asleep it is your eyes that close.

If I could live again my life,
in the next, I’ll try
to make more mistakes.
I won’t try to be so perfect.
I’ll be more relaxed.
I’ll be more full than I am now.
In fact, I’ll take fewer things seriously.
I’ll be less hygenic.
I’ll take more risks.
I’ll take more trips.
I’ll watch more sunsets.
I’ll climb more mountains.
I’ll swim more rivers.
I’ll go to more places I’ve never been.
I’ll eat more ice creams and less lima beans.
I’ll have more real problems and less imaginary ones.
I was one of those people who lead
prudent and prolific lives each minute their alive.
Of couse, I had moments of joy but,
if I could go back, I’ll try to have only good moments.

If you don’t know, thats what life is made of.
Don’t lose the now.

I was one of those who never goes anywhere without a thermometer,
without a hot-water bottle,
and without an umberella and without a parachute.

If I could live again, I will travel light.
If I could live again, I’ll try to work bare feet at the beginning of spring till
the end of autumn.
I’ll ride more carts.
I’ll watch more sunrises and play with more children.
If I have the life to live.

Now,I am 85

I was born in a town where the rivers flow free
On a January night when the cold winds freeze
I got an Irish name and an injury
Blessing and a curse cast down on me
Ain’t nobody got the blues like me
Ain’t nobody got the blues like me

Was a blood red sky on the morning tide
Was a cold wind blowing when I left that night
And the morning bells rang, alright, alright
Shoulda stayed home with you that night
Ain’t nobody played the fool like I
Ain’t nobody played the fool like I

Things got bad and things got worse
Half like blessing, half like curse
It’s these blessings so hard to see sometimes
Gotta little clearer about dusk last night
Ain’t nobody got a blessing like mine
Ain’t nobody got a blessing like mine

It’s a red sky night and I’m doing alright
It’s a red sky night and I’m doing just fine

History of the Night

Throughout the course of their generations
men constructed the night.
At first she was blindness;
thorns raking bare feet,
fear of wolves.
We shall never know who forged the word
for the interval of shadow
dividing the two twilights;
we shall never know in what age it came to mean
the starry hours.
Others created the myth.
They made her the mother of the unruffled Fates
that spin our destiny,
thev sacrificed black ewes to her, and the cock
who crows his own death.
The Chaldeans assigned to her twelve houses;
to Zeno, infinite words.
She took shape from Latin hexameters
and the terror of Pascal.
Luis de Leon saw in her the homeland
of his stricken soul.
Now we feel her to be inexhuastible
like an ancient wine
and no one can gaze on her without vertigo
and time has charged her with eternity.

And to think that she wouldn’t exist
except for those fragile instruments, the eyes.
